Start of an Industry

Atari 2600, the only video game console that has wood grain printed on it. The Atari 2600 or Atari VCS (Video Computer System) was Atari’s golden child. With the 2600 Atari felt that they were unstoppable in the new video game market they have established. Although rightfully so, every console Atari made after the 2600 could not compete with the numbers that the VCS brought. Now how did the 2600 come to be?

Atari started off with it’s Pong arcade machine which debuted on November 29 1972. It faced great success and started a trend of home Pong consoles. This was during a time in which semiconductors, chips and rom (Read-Only Memory) were on the rise which meant that a console or computer can be built with less cost and much smaller. With all of this Atari released the 2600 in 1977 with a price tag of $199. What made the 2600 different from the pong consoles was that the console could play different games other than pong with cartridges that have roms on it. Arcades were also on the rise which was perfect since many at the time would love to play these games at home and the VCS offered that. Many arcade hits, like Space Invaders and Asteroid, were released on the system causing the system to sell very well and gross $2 billion dollars in 1980. This would last long since the relatively new market had no quality control or any control at the point, so in 1983 the decline of video game sales and interest would prompt the video game crash of 1983 to occured due to influx and over saturation of other video game consoles from other companies, like the Odyssey 2 or Colecovision, and plethora of horrible made games such as Chase the Chuck Wagon and the Atari 2600 version of Pacman. This cause Atari to lose money and even though they tried to gain interest with the Atari 5200 and the 7800 it was too late. It wouldn’t be until 1985 in which Nintendo would bring back the interest of video games to the United States with their Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).

It had a 1.19mhz processor, 128 bytes of ram, and was able to display at a resolution of 160 x 192 pixels on screen. Now a modern calculator can outperform that and then some, but even with these limitations there were still some graphically and complex games that came out for the system. On the console there is 6 switches: one powers the system on, the other changes the screen to black and white or color, the two in the middle control the difficulty of the game for either of the two players, the other switch controls the different game modes in the game, and the last switch reset the game. The 2600 has two controller ports on the back with controllers that just have one button and a joystick. In the middle of the 2600 there is a place to insert the cartridge.

The Atari 2600 would be forever remembered as the grandfather of video games. It established, and also kinda destroyed, an industry that every year is growing more and more. With the new wave of collectors, the 2600 and it’s different model variations can cost up $80 and up for a working system and wires. The games themselves are pretty cheap because of overproduction and simple nature of the games due to them mostly being arcade ports. The Atari 2600 is personally a fun system to play and try out since gives a sense of nostalgia even if you did not grow up with it. The games are addicting despite them having simple graphics. It would go down in history as the console that started it all.

  1. This was a great way to conclude the vast world of obscure technology. It is true, Atari was a very addicting gaming console, helping it revolutionize the gaming enterprise. I feel that it is very important to be aware of past pieces of technology (though we laugh at them nowadays), so that we take advantage of the flaws of previous generations and work to better enhance our civilization. Don't give up exploring the old world of innovation, because as we all know, the past dictates what happens in the future.

  2. I believe that this was a great last blog to post about. I always thought that the Atari 2600 was something unique compared to other consoles because how this was the beginning of something much bigger in the future. I believe this can be applied to life as well because of how we are the representation of the Atari by starting out brand new, not knowing that one day we just might change the world some day. This I believe is something that we should keep in our minds, to encourage ourselves to do great things in life after high school. Great blog!

Dorito Power

Rotary engines, the official motor when burning oil is actually a good thing. The rotary engine or Wankel engine is much like chocolate ice cream in the car world, you hate it or you don’t. It is actually interesting concept because unlike other engine configurations, there is no cylinders. Instead they have a rotor which some claim to look like a Dorito spinning. The inventor of this odd engine was a Felix Wankel. Wankel was born in August 1902 in Lahr, Germany. He came up with the idea at the age of 17. It was only after 2 World Wars when he began working with NSU Mototenwerke in the research department without ever getting a degree or a driver license. He complete his design in 1954 and in 1957 and 1958 the prototypes were tested. In 1961 Mazda had contracted with NSU to produce the engine and install them in their cars. The engine was proven to be quite powerful in the 1960s and soon the engine was used by other car companies. The engine would began to lose its popularity in ...

EV1, the Prius of the late 1990s. I decided to celebrate Earth day with something that is the embodiment of going green… the electric car. I could have gone with Tesla or the previously mentioned Prius, but of course, those are cars as not obscure as the EV1 since they're either crashed or not legally allowed on the road anymore. The EV1, for those who did not see the video in Economics last year, stands for the creative name Electric Vehicle 1 and one of the first mass produce modern electric car. The car soon had a created major up roar by buyers because of GM repossession them and crushing them. The creation of the EV1 started when California CARB or California Air Resource Board in the 1990s started to impose stricter emission due to combat the horrible air pollution at the time. The air quality was so bad in California that it was worse than the other 49 states combined. Thus strongly encouraged major car companies like GM, Honda, Toyota, etc to create emission free veh...

Just My Type

Typewriter, the official device of that satisfying click sound from the movies. Typewriters were once a popular form of typing up essays and document in a clear and formal way in which regular handwritten documents could not replicate. Now they are relics of the past due to the rise of personal computers, allowing so much for functionality with less hoops to jump through. The first commercially produced  typewriters appeared on scene in 1874, but became widespread in offices until the mid 1880s. Throughout this time there has been many manufactures and companies who added improvements over time. Historians believes that the typewriter was invented 52 time in some form by other inventors and thinkers. This helped to create competition and develope many types of typewriters. The common mechanical typewriters works like this, the keyboard is in the same order as the keys on a computer or on a digital one on a cellphone. When a is press, for example the F key, a lever swings...
