A Furry Discomposure

Image result for furbyFurby, the official toy of uneasy feelings since 1998. These toys were once the rage during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Every kid wanted one and every parent had to get it. Although they are unsettling to some, they are quite an interesting toy and very advance for their time, which most likely contributed to such high demand for them.

The brilliant minds behind the Furby were Dave Hampton and Caleb Chung. They developed the Furby in 9 months and they spent an additional 9 months coming up with a design. They attempted twice to license the Furby concept until Richard C. Levy pitch the product to Tiger Electronics who would later show off at the American International Toy Fair. The initial sales price for Furby was $35 and became the must have toy of the 1998 holiday season. The resale price of Furbies was skyrocket to several hundred dollars as supply could not meet the demand. In a twelve month period, Furby would go off to sell over 27 million units. This would not be the last for Furby as it was rebooted in 2012 well extraordinary sells.

As for the technology behind it, it was a pretty advanced and complex toy for its time. They were pre programmed to only know their native language of furbish, which is a mixture of simple syllables and short words. As they “grow” and were played with, they would begin to “learn” the English language. Sadly to burst many bubbles, Furbies were already pre programmed with English words and phrases, and only begin to use these English words as time passes by. They did have microphones, but it was only use to react to monotonous beeps if a loud sound was made. Furbies have a many sensors in order to know how to respond, like for example sensor on it’s back to know that it is being pet thus it would start to purr. There are many complex gears that are driven by motors to make body parts like ear, eyes, etc move or even dance. Furbies also have IR sensors above their head to be able to communicate with other Furbies.

Furbies, although creepy, are very intricate and well made toys. They are able to survive a beating from many kids who use them as baseballs and are able to bring hours of joy to many kids. Also Furbies are such step up from tamagotchi.

FUNFACT: NSA ban Furbies in their offices due to securities concerns that they were "able" to record voices.

  1. Wow, great blog. I did not realize how intricate the technology of a Furby was. And that is a great fun fact!

  2. Your title caught my attention, but once looking at the initial pictures, I could just tell what this blog would be about. This was a totally unexpected but totally interesting piece of obscure technology.

  3. Man I remember the 2012 reboot and it still haunts me. As you already know my sister had one and I could hear it talk in the middle of the night from my room. Yeeesh! I would take tamagotchi anyday over Furby.

Flip Floppy

Floppy disk, the official device of size does not matter and the symbol of every saving icon known to man. Much how the death of Jesus became the symbol of saving us from our sins in trade for His blood on the cross, the floppy disk eventually died off and became our symbol of saving files and document. Sure that may be a very odd comparison to some, but there has to be a reason why this old tech is still remembered in an age where physical media is on the decline and most of our files, photos, videos, etc are in the cloud. No other piece of technology is so recognizable, yet so unknown to many. The floppy disk was first introduced commercially in the late 1960s and these disks were 8 inches in size! These disk were mostly used by IBM computers in 1971 and were later produced and improved by IBM and other companies such as Memorex. The floppy disk got it’s name from… you guessed it… because they wobbly and flexible, even though IBM originally called it “Type 1 Diskette”, creative...

Telegraph, the first device to allow people to finally “text “ one-another even an ocean away. I would be writing about more specifically about the electric telegraph.Basically a telegraph is a machine that is able to send information through Morse’s code. The telegraph was the first to send information to one place to another no matter the distance and in a matter of minutes! This means that important information like treaties, war status, etc could be sent without waiting weeks for a letter. The invention of the electric telegraph is mostly thank by two set of researchers: Sir William and Sir Charles Wheatstone also Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail. Morse and Vail helped to develop what now we know as Morse’s code which is made up of dots and dashes for each letter of the alphabet. While William and Charles are credited with building the machine itself in 1830s after the discovery of the first battery by Alessandro Volta and Hans Christian Oersted discovery of the connection betwe...

Automatic Safety

Automatic or passive seat belts, the great compromise between automakers and the United States government. Passive seat belts were one of those “safety” products that cause more harm than good for the end user. It was much hated by consumers and led to them only having a short life from 1990 to 1995. Now why were these seat belts a thing in the first place? Well the passive seat belts were invented by Volkswagen in 1972 and was first used in the Volkswagen Golf in 1975. This lead the Brock Adam, the United States Secretary of Transportation, to mandated that every car in to have either automatic seat belts or airbags by 1983. Now this angered many lobbyist who thought this was a way too soon of a deadline. In 1981 the mandate was dropped then transferred to the Supreme Court which lead to the mandate to stay, but now with an extended deadline of 1990. Now airbags were still a relatively new system which meant it was pretty expensive. Thus many car companies decided to go with pas...
